Olympic Day Celebration

Since 1989, the Nigeria Olympic Committee has organized the Olympic Day annually in most of the 36 States of the Federation and Federal Capital, Abuja with tens of thousands of runners participating The OLYMPIC DAY is celebrated in all nations of the world in the week of 23rd June every year. The Olympic Day was introduced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in June 1989 to commemorate the day in which the IOC was created by the Paris Congress on 23rd June, 1894.

The Day is marked with a 10 km run which is broken into further stages of 6km and 3km to accommodate all age groups. This grassroots sports event attracts immense enthusiasm and wide publicity amongst the populace and is a great opportunity for promotion of sport for all.

National Olympic Academy

The Nigeria Olympic Committee established the National Olympic Academy as a platform for a wide range of Olympic Education programmes. Through linkages with the International Olympic Academy in Greece, the NOC features participants in the annual IOA programmes which include the following:

  • International Olympic Association Sessions for Young Participants
  • International Session for Directors of National Olympic Academies
  • International Session for Physical & Health Educators
  • International Seminar on Olympic Education for Postgraduate Students
