Centre Shane Lawal was born in Abeokuta (Nigeria) on 8 October 1986. At the age of 28 the 2.08m player is coming to Barcelona after winning everything in Italy for Dinamo Sassari, including the League, the Super Cup and the Cup last season (2014/15). He improved all season and played a key role in the seven-match series to beat Reggio Emilia to the league title.
He spent three years at the University of Oakland, and then was at Wayne State in the NCAA second division, with an average of 11.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, making one of the top defenders in his conference. He then turned professional at Al Arabi Club in Qatar (15 points and 13 rebounds per game).
Lawal went to Spain in 2010-11 to play for Rayet Guadalajara (LEB Plata), and then switched to the LEB Oro and Knet Rioja Clavijo, where he topped the league for rebounds and was second in blocks. In 2012-13 he left for Tezenis Verona in Italy’s LegaDue where he really made his breakthrough on the paint with 13.6 rebounds and 1.9 blocks per game. Before his treble winning year at Dinamo Sassari in 2014/15 he spent a year at BC Astana in Kazakhstan, where he led the championship for blocks and won League and Copa.
He is so big and tall that he is the ideal man under the boards. Slam-dunks and alley-oops come naturally to him, and his dodges and dummies are a delight to behold. He’s also very agile in defence and very useful for his blocking ability. He generally scores around ten points a game – a yardstick being the 2014/15 at Dinamo Sassari where he averaged out at 11.7 points per game in the League and 9.5 in the Euroleague and Eurocup.
