At least two million people are expected to visit the Nigeria House at the forthcoming 2016 Olympic Games slated to take place in Rio, Brazil.

President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr. Habu Gumel revealed this yesterday in Abuja during the inauguration of the Rio 2016 Nigeria House Committee.

Inaugurating the committee, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Mallam Al-Hassan Yakmut said the House was part of the core principles of putting Nigeria at par with other countries.

He said the House was open to all adding that it will be accessible to tourists, observers and athletes who may want to socialize with others after a hectic sporting engagement.

“As part of the 208 affiliates of the Olympic family, it is important for Nigeria to be properly represented at a big event like the Olympics which is also the biggest sporting event. It will give us an opportunity to showcase our cultural prowess and that is why we are collaborating with the NOC for proper and dynamic outing.”

Speaking more on the collaborative effort, Gumel said the idea underscores the synergy with the NSC for national sports development even as he pledged that the idea will remain forever.

The NOC boss also said that his outfit and the NSC must work together for the success of the Nigeria House Project to record about two million visitors.

“Nigeria House in London 2012 was a big success, it almost hit the one million visitors mark by the end of the Games. We hope that the Brazil outing will surpass it because of the cultural similarity between Nigeria and Brazil. We must showcase our country wherever we go.

“We intend to make it a place to be for everybody. We hope to have about two million visitors there because there will be exhibitions, film, drama and music on stage by top Nigerian artists” Gumel stated.

The Secretary General of the NOC, Tunde Popoola is the chairman while Stanley Okebugwu will serve as the secretary.
